Get involved in Bike to School Week 2021 with Sustrans

22 September 2021

Organised by Sustrans and the Bikeability Trust, this week-long event encourages families to cycle and scoot to school.

Bike to School Week takes place between Monday 27th September and Friday 1st October 2021. During the week, families are encouraged to cycle or scoot to school and beyond, celebrating the huge benefits that an active school run can have on children’s health, wellbeing and the environment.

What are the benefits of cycling and scooting?

The benefits include:

  • Improving physical fitness
  • Supporting mental health and relieving stress through exercise
  • Introducing children to healthy travel habits when they are young
  • Getting stuck into an activity together as a family
  • Helping children to get to know their local area
  • It can be enjoyed by people of all ages
  • Reducing the amount of pollution created on the school run
  • It’s a lot of fun!

How can my school get involved in Bike to School Week?

To support schools throughout Bike to School Week, there's a range of resources available. These include:

  • school posters
  • five curriculum-linked daily activities to be completed in class for Early Years Foundation through to Key Stage 3
  • a video guide with simple practices to check your bike is safe to ride
  • school presentations

These activities aim to inspire pupils to think about their journeys to school, understand the benefits of active travel, and consider the causes and effects of air pollution.

Getting families involved

Sustrans would love to know how many families cycle or scoot to school during Bike to School Week 2021.

All families that fill in a short online form to let Sustrans know their children will take part will automatically be entered into a free prize draw to win a Frog bike.

Sustrans have created resources for schools to send home to parents and guardians about Bike to School Week and are asking families to tell Sustrans if they are taking part.
