Transport for Wales will undertake further work for the South Wales Metro this month following the extension of the alert level four lockdown restrictions.

With passenger numbers significantly reduced because of the impact of COVID-19, TfW will use this period to continue with vital infrastructure work for the project.

For customers travelling in South Wales over the next two weeks, buses will replace trains for all rail services on the Aberdare, Merthyr and Treherbert lines north of Radyr until Sunday 24 January.

Following passenger feedback, TfW will be introducing earlier bus services from these areas into Cardiff. Customers are urged to check online before they travel.

Karl Gilmore, Rail Programme Director, Transport for Wales said:

“Our teams have been working day and night since the start of the year to complete this essential work and we’re all really pleased with the progress that has been made.

“With the essential travel only restrictions continuing, this is the most appropriate time to push ahead with work while also keeping disruption to a minimum.

“For those key workers who still need to use the network, we have listened to feedback and will be putting on earlier services into Cardiff which should also allow for greater social distancing.

“Once again I’d like to thank all our customers and railway neighbours for their patience and urge those who need to travel to plan ahead.

“I’d also like to thank all our teams and partners for their continued efforts.”

The South Wales Metro will significantly improve connectivity throughout South Wales and provide access to jobs, leisure and other opportunities for the people of Wales, through unifying rail, bus and active travel routes. 

The South Wales Metro project has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through Welsh Government.
