Cycling and Walking

Cycling and Walking

There are some fantastic benefits to travelling by bike or foot, from being fun and saving you money, to lowering your carbon footprint and helping the environment. This page contains some helpful information should you choose to walk or cycle part or whole of your journey.

Sustrans is the leading sustainable transport charity in the UK, providing information on how to travel by bike or on foot as well as working to improve infrastructure such as the National Cycle Network, to enable people to travel in more sustainable ways. You can visit the Sustrans website here.

Bikes on Buses

Whilst every effort is made to maintain the information on our website, we would advise you to check with the bus / rail operator that you can take your bikes on particular services before making your journey.

First Cymru: Only fold up bicycles that can be put into the luggage pen can be taken on First Cymru bus services.

Cardiff - Swansea Shuttle: Bicycles can be carried on the Shuttle operated by First Cymru.

Bikes on Trains

On some services, Transport for Wales ask you to reserve a cycle space when you buy your ticket (as far in advance as possible and at least 24 hours before you travel). Reservations are free - call 0333 3211 202 for more information and to book. These lines are open from 08:00 – 20:00 Monday to Saturday and 11:00 – 20:00 Sunday. Calls to this number are charged at local rates from a BT phone.

On services without reservations, cycle spaces are available on a first come, first served basis.

Some of the Valleys and Cardiff local routes don’t have any space for bicycles during peak hours.

You can find more information on their website.

Bikes on National Express Coaches

Bikes can be carried on National Express Coaches if they are wrapped or packed in a purpose built case or bag. For more information contact National Express by calling 08717 818181.
