With the Christmas holidays now a distant memory, you and the kids are probably looking forward to a well-deserved break over the February half-term. To help you make the most of this time, we have compiled a list of fun-filled activities for all the family to enjoy across South, Mid and North Wales.

In this second ‘February Half-Term Highlights’ post, find out where you can try your hand at baking bread, see Britain’s Got Talent winner Lost Voice Guy perform live, and gaze at the stars in an interactive planetarium experience in Mid-Wales.

February Half-Term at Llanerchaeron, Ceredigion:

The stunning Llanerchaeron Estate really does have something for everyone this half-term! Whether you want to try your hand at gardening, cooking, or even wallpaper making, Llanerchaeron will be running free daily activities for you to enjoy from 23rd February - 3rd March.   

Fancy yourself as the next Paul Hollywood? Join one of the park’s volunteers in the Villa kitchen to show off your best bread making skills. You knead to give it a go! These workshops will be running on Saturday 23rd and 2nd from 11:30am -2:30pm.

If you are more of a nature enthusiast, the park’s ‘Paper Pots and Sweet Peas’ (on Monday 25th and Sunday 3rd) could be the perfect activity for you! Learn from the park’s gardener how to sow your own sweet peas to take home and grow. You can also discover what bugs eat the Estate’s collections and how they deal with them on ‘Bug Day’ (Thursday 28th).

The T1 service, operated by First Cymru, runs between Aberystwyth and Carmarthen. The service runs every hour on weekdays and stops ½ a mile away from Llanerchaeron’s entrance at the New Forge Inn. There is also a weekend service.

Winter Warmer Trains at Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway:

First opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway now serves as a fantastic tourist attraction throughout the year.

To celebrate February half-term and St David’s Day, visitors can ride in the heated carriages of this traditional steam train on a round trip from Llanfair Caereinion to Castle Caereinion. You can also treat yourself to some of the delicious goodies on offer in the cosy tearoom at Llanfair Caereinion. Return tickets cost £9.00 for adults and £4.00 for children from Sunday 17th February- Saturday 2nd March.

To book your tickets and take in the spectacular scenery of the Powis Estate (seeing lots of wonderful wildlife on the way!), visit the Railway’s website.

Welshpool Raven Square station is located at the west end of the town, and is about 1 mile from the mainline (Shrewsbury - Machynlleth - Aberystwyth / Pwllheli) station.  Passengers arriving by rail should head towards the centre of town and continue straight at the crossroads. The station is located near the roundabout at Raven Square.

Planetarium Show: The Solar System at Elan Valley, on Sunday 24th February

Have you ever wondered what the earth looks like from space? Or wanted to see the surface of the moon up close? On Sunday 24th February, reach for the stars at Elan Valley Visitor’s Centre in Rhayader and experience the wonders of our universe in this immersive planetarium experience.

Take a tour of the Solar System with Martin Nelmes and his team from Aberystwyth University. They will be on hand to answer all of your space related questions, and offer a fascinating insight into the intricate workings of our universes’ moons and planets.

There will be 4 free shows at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 2pm. Places are limited, so call 01597 810880 to book!

Elan Valley is situated in the county of Powys in mid-Wales, just a couple of hours from Birmingham and Cardiff. It can be accessed easily from the nearby town of Rhayader, which is service well by public transport. National Cycle Route 81 also runs right past the Visitor’s Centre! 

Lost Voice Guy at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Friday 22nd February

Shooting to stardom after his unpresented 2018 Britain’s Got Talent win, stand-up comedian Lost Voice Guy (also known as Lee Ridley) is heading to Aberystwyth as part of his UK tour.

Lee is the first stand-up comedian to use a communication aid and is now one of the biggest names in the UK comedy circuit.

As well as winning Britain’s Got Talent, Lee is also the star and writer of BBC Radio 4’s comedy series ‘Ability’. He has performed at some of the most popular comedy festivals across the UK including Edinburgh Fringe and the Nottingham Comedy Festival.

Tickets for the gig, which is for those aged 14+, can be purchased on the Aberystwyth Arts Centre website. Don’t miss out! They’re selling fast.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre is in close proximity to a number of bus stops serving local services including the 512, X28 and T2. Trains also run directly to Aberystwyth from Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Newtown and Machynlleth, every 1-2 hours.

National Cycle Museum, Llandrindod Wells:

Calling all budding cyclists! If seeing Geraint Thomas win The Tour De France last year gave your child the cycling bug, then the National Cycle Museum in Llandrindod Wells is a must see attraction.

See first-hand how the bicycle has evolved over its 200-year history into the design that we know today. From tandem bikes, to Penny Farthings and tricycles. Things have changed quite a bit since the bicycle first came about!

You can also learn about some of the most impressive Olympic and world records held for cycling, as well as where and when they took place. There is a free fun quiz for the kids to show off their cycling knowledge and a museum gift shop to pick up a souvenir from your visit.

Entry is £5 for adults, £4 for concessions, and £2 for children. Tickets can only be purchased with cash on the day of your visit. Head to the Museum’s website to find out more.
