Road Safety Week 2014

Road Safety Week 2014

17 November 2014

For those us of driving, cycling, or simply out on the roads, this week is all about Road Safety Week.

Road Safety Week is the UK’s biggest road safety event, coordinated annually by the road safety charity Brake, and involves thousands of schools, organisations, local councils and committees each year.

Brake work to make streets and communities safer by helping to prevent road accidents and promote safety amongst travellers. Figures show that 5 deaths and 61 serious injuries happen on UK roads every day; the campaign Brake are running this week exists to help stop these occurring by raising awareness amongst travellers and spreading the message of safety first when travelling on the roads.

What Can I Do?

Whether you’re an organisation, or simply someone wishing to get involved, there are plenty of ways to take part in the campaign. By heading over to the Road Safety Week website, you can register to receive a free action pack with resources and advice to help spread the word in your community.

Alternatively, why not encourage staff or friends to leave their cars at home for the week and opt for public transport? Campaigns such as this can be a great motivation to explore new modes of transport and think about the way that you make your journeys.

So Why use Public Transport?

You can experience some great benefits from incorporating public transport as part of your routine, from reducing your carbon footprint to saving money on petrol and parking. As demonstrated by the Road Safety Week campaign, the roads can be a dangerous place, especially during busy commuting hours; hopping on the bus for example can even make for a less stressful journey, as you don’t have to worry about concentrating on driving through the traffic.

If Road Safety Week has inspired you to think about swapping some of your car journeys in favour of public transport, you can have a look over on our Journey Planner where you will be able to find all the information you’ll need on bus, train and even cycling routes for your selected journey.

If travelling by bus sounds appealing, you can also head over to our Timetable search to find timetables for your specific route, or even our Live Travel Map, where you will be able to type in your location to see bus stops that are in your area and the journeys that you can make from there.

No matter what your mode of transport, whether you’re a car user, bus passenger or cyclist, consideration and care for others on the road is the message being spread this week through the campaign.

You can keep up to date with what’s going on throughout the week by following the hashtag #RoadSafetyWeek on Twitter where you will be able to find others who are getting involved in the campaign. Let us know if you’ve tried out your local public transport routes over the course of the week!
