There will be a full city centre closure in place across Cardiff when Wales play England (February 23rd) and Ireland (March 16th) at the Principality Stadium.

Please see below for a full list of road closures and details of service diversions. We will update this information as and when we receive it from operators.


Cardiff Council:

Wales vs Ireland- Saturday 16th March: Full city centre road closure from 11:15 - 17:45 (KO-14:45)

For a full road closure the following roads are closed:

  • Kingsway from its junction with North Road to its junction with Duke Street
  • Cowbridge Road East from its junction with Cathedral Road to its junction with Westgate Street
  • Tudor Street from its junction with Clare Road to its junction with Wood Street (access for residents & traders will be permitted via Fitzhammon Embankment)
  • Plantagenet Street & Beauchamp Street from their junctions with Despenser Place to their junctions with Tudor Street (access for residents & traders will be permitted)
  • Saunders Road from its junction with St Mary Street
  • Customhouse Street throughout its length (access to private car parks will be permitted)
  • Penarth Road from its junction with Saunders Road to the entrance leading into the rear of the Central Train Station

The following roads will be closed in their entirety: Duke Street, Castle Street, High Street, St Mary Street, Caroline Street, Wood Street, Central Square, Westgate Street, Quay Street, Guildhall Place, Golate, Park Street, Havelock Street & Scott Road 


  • From early in the day Scott Road and Park Street will be closed as a result of the need to prepare gate 5 and to protect queuing fans.
  • Civic Centre: Access to part of the Civic Centre will be controlled throughout the day, with access allowed only for event parking, limited commuter parking, loading and access to private car parks. Roads affected include: King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road & Gorsedd Gardens Road
  • From 16:00 (16th) – until train queues disperse Station Terrace in its entirety will be closed – cars will be able to exit the Capitol Shopping centre car park via North Edward Street / Station Terrace northbound onto Newport Road / Dumfries Place.

If there are any safety concerns in connection with crowds queuing to go into the venue prior to gates opening there may be a need to close Wood Street & Westgate Street earlier, along with lane restrictions adjacent to Gate 1 on Cowbridge Road East.

If there are any safety concerns in connection with the Central Station & Queen Street Station queuing systems, then in Station Terrace, Wood Street, Westgate Street, Park Street, Havelock Street, St Mary Street, Penarth Road, Saunders Road and Custom House Street will remain closed until safety concerns are remedied.

Please also note that following the removal of the event closure the night-time closure of the Lower end of St Mary St, from its junction with Wood St / Westgate St to the junction with Mill Lane will remain in place, meaning that it will be implemented earlier than normal at 17:45 (16th)

Getting there: Access from Junction 33 of the M4, then follow signage to site on Leckwith Road

Distance from City centre / Principality Stadium: 1.5miles (10-15mins)

Cost: £10 payable on the day at the car park (cash only) or £8 pre-book – If you pre-book you will be required to PRINT AND HAND TO THE SELLER YOUR PRE-BOOKING CONFIRMATION, without this printed confirmation you will be required to pay cash on the day.

Drop-off Point: Tresillian Way North, rear of Railway Station

The car park will have a staff presence from 8:30am, will open at 9:00am, with the first bus at 9:00am. The last bus will leave the pick-up point at 9:00pm, with the car park closing at 9:30pm.




Cardiff Bus:

Your buses will start from different city centre locations. The dates and times of these diversions are as follows:

Wales vs Ireland (Saturday 16th March)- 11:00-18:30*

*please note that the Fri/Sat night diversions will come into place from 18:30 on this date (normally 22:00)

First Cymru:

Wales vs Ireland (Saturday 16th March)- 10:45-18:15

The X2 services will divert to Tudor Street to pick up and drop off passengers during the closures.




Newport Bus:

The 30 Newport to Cardiff service will terminate and depart from Greyfriars Road from 13:15-20:00

After 20:00 the services will follow the normal Friday and Saturday night diversions through the City Centre (normally from 22:00).



New Adventure Travels:

On Saturday the 16th of March 2019, Wales will be taking on Ireland in the 6 nations tournament. As as result, services will be diverted all day until the end of service.

Wales vs Ireland- Saturday 16th March

All Stagecoach buses will finish and start and at Greyfriars Road all day.

Buses 122 and 124 will run via Gabalfa and NOT serve Cathedral Road or Castle Street for the rest of the day.  

Buses 25 and 132 will NOT serve Lloyd George Avenue and Cardiff Bay.




TrawsCymru T4 and T14, Stagecoach 132 and X4 will leave from Bus Stop GN until 20:00 hrs, Bus Stop GJ thereafter.

Stagecoach 25, 26 and X3 will leave from Bus Stop GH

Stagecoach 122, 124, 136 will continue to leave from Bus Stop GE 



Transport for Wales:

Wales vs Ireland- Saturday 16th March

  • There will be limited capacity on local Cardiff and Valleys routes after the match.
  • Transport for Wales advise customers not to wait until the last train service to go home.
  • On Saturday please check your journey plans before you travel at www.journeycheck.com/TfWrail  for the latest information about real-time service amendments.
  • A post-match queue system will be in place at Cardiff Central station.
  • Cardiff Queen Street will close at 18:00. For all local Cardiff and Valleys services please use Cardiff Central after this time.
